$8,000 Grant Helps Restore Structural Integrity of James Nevins Memorial Pavilion in Hyner

By Kevin Rauch

HYNER -Thanks to an $8,000 donation as part of a two-year grant from the Clinton County Community Foundation, the Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Association was able to replace the 30 support posts that hold up the roof on the James Nevins Memorial Pavilion.

Along with the nearby shooting range, the pavilion is part of the outside draw of their complex, offering a roof over head for outdoor enthusiasts such as the PA Trail Dogs and participants in the Little Loggers Run, typically providing shade on hot summer days during their activities.

Additionally, the pavilion offers a picturesque view of the outdoors, notably sitting in the shadow of Hyner View for celebrations like weddings and similar events.

The repairs were necessary due to many of the six-by-six support columns beneath the pavilion having deteriorated below the surface, compromising the structural integrity. To stabilize the pavilion, the existing structure was temporarily supported while the weakened portions of the vertical posts were carefully removed. In their place, new concrete footings were poured, and fresh sections of vertical supports were installed. These repairs restore the pavilion stability and ensure its long term durability.

Smith Lumber and Excavation was hired by the WCSA for the project. The pictures show how the old posts are braced for the bottom, rotting sections to be replaced.
