Danville’s Wagner whitewashes Lady Wildcats
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP, PA – Danville softball pitcher Morgan Wagner was the difference on Tuesday as the visiting Lady Ironmen handed the Central Mountain softball team its first loss of the season.
Wagner was virtually untouchable in a 2-0 Danville win, the first loss of the season for the now 4-1 Lady Wildcats. Danville moved to 5-0 with the win. The game was the first time this season Danville scored less than 10 runs.
The Danville lefty gave up a lead-off single to center to CM’s Alyssa Fisher in the first inning and another lead-off single to Fisher to start the sixth, but Fisher ended up left on third base both times, as close as the Lady Wildcats would get to a run. Otherwise, Wagner was dominant, recording 18 of the 21 outs by strikeouts, including the final five of the game. She did walk two batters, but Central Mountain never had more than one runner get on base in any inning.
The Danville pitcher was clocked at 66 miles an hour, a standout time for even a college pitcher. She will be playing at Towson State next season. Central Mountain Coach Fred Caldwell complimented Wagner on her performance. He said his players were familiar with her prowess through travel ball and, “You have to tip your hat to her.”
Coach Caldwell said his team “needs to see those kinds of pitchers to get better.” He indicated he was happy with the pitching from his two young hurlers, sophomore Allison Lininger and freshman Adalyn McKeague. Lininger went the first four and gave up the game’s only two runs in a 3-hit Danville fourth inning. McKeague pitched three shutout innings in relief; together they gave up eight hits, struck out five and walked two.
Danville’s Morgan helped her cause with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in one run.
Central Mountain has a Thursday trip to Mifflinburg (1-3) and Friday with a contest with District 6 opponent Hollidaysburg (1-0). Both games are 4:30 p.m. starts.
