South Renovo Real Estate Taxes Going Up

First Hike in Over 40 Years

SOUTH RENOVO – For the first time in better than four decades, South Renovo property owners are looking at a hike in the real estate levy.

South Renovo borough council earlier this month put final approval on a 2014 budget, one which calls for a two mill real estate tax increase, from five to seven mills, to help fund the general fund budget of $143,857.

At the time of budget introduction a borough spokesman said the hike is needed to plan for future borough improvements and street paving/repair projects, terming inflation the main reason for the increase; the cost of insurance, gasoline, and electricity are all going up.

The Southside council is still in the market for a new mayor, the position vacant since the death of Jim “Red” Franklin earlier this year.

Council has set a special meeting for this Friday at 5 p.m. to choose a replacement, the choice then forwarded to Clinton County Common Pleas Court for approval.

It was reported one borough resident had volunteered for the post.

Meanwhile council will hold its reorganizational meeting Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. The new year will see the beginning of the seat reduction on borough council, from seven members to five, per petition to the court last spring. The action followed borough difficulties in filling council vacancies.
