By Bees O’Brien
BOONEVILLE- Sugar Valley’s softball team had confidence entering their meeting with Montgomery on Thursday night in a Mid Penn Conference softball clash. The Lady Phoenix were coming off of a big 13-3 win over Millville and were looking to avenge their 11-1 loss to the Lady Raiders on the road earlier this season.
For two innings Sugar Valley showed just how good they could be by only trailing D4 1A’s second place team 1-0. That slim lead would expand from there.
Montgomery would plate 5 runs in the top of the third inning and would never look back. The perennial Mid Penn powers would tack on 2 more runs in top of the fourth inning, before expanding their lead to 10-0 following a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Facing a mercy rule defeat, the Lady Phoenix would fight back in their half of the sixth by extending the game with a pair of runs.
Sugar Valley trailed 10-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, but Montgomery would have another big inning by scoring five more runs. SVRC responded by scoring one final run in their last at bat to set the 15-3 final.
Sugar Valley showed no fear at the plate by compiling a season-high 13 hits. Cheyenne Weaver led the way by collecting three hits. Olivia Johnson, Olivia Clester and Dakota Holdren had multiple hit days. Clester and Johnson both had doubles. Kayleigh Showers also collected a double for Sugar Valley. Ellynn Scarborough also had a double. Brynn Swanger and Nevaeh Walters rounded out the hits for Sugar Valley.
The Lady Phoenix fell to 2-7 on the season and will travel to Hughesville on Saturday for an 11am start.
