Dogwood Circle Garden Club to Host Humming Bird Presentation

LOCK HAVEN – Spring is upon us and our favorite summer birds are returning from the south. Dogwood Circle Garden Club invites the public to its meeting on May 1 highlighting one of our favorite garden visitors, hummingbirds! The speaker is Wayne Laubscher and starts at 6:30 at the Poorman Gallery, 352 E. Water Street in Lock Haven.

Wayne’s program “Autumn Jewels: Vagrant Western Hummingbirds” is about hummingbirds- their natural history and discussion of our eastern species, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Information on how to properly feed them and what plants are good attractants for hummingbirds will be provided. Special emphasis will be on the recently recognized phenomenon of western U.S. species of hummingbirds showing up in the fall and winter in the east and in some cases, overwintering. Banding of hummingbirds will be discussed.

Wayne is an official bander of hummingbirds and also Saw-whet Owls at his farm as part of Project Owlnet, a volunteer project. Recently, prior to retirement, he worked for the Centre County Planning Office as the Mosquito Disease Control Coordinator for Centre, Clinton, and Clearfield Counties.

Wayne is the Clinton Co. compiler for the PA Birds publication and a member of the Lycoming Audubon Society board. He is a board member of the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology as well as a member of the Northcentral PA Conservancy Technical Committee. Wayne also coordinates the Audubon Christmas Bird Count centered in the Lock Haven area.
