George E. Shilling, Jr. – Obituary

George E. Shilling, Jr., 84, of 12 Crestmont Dr., Lock Haven, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Williamsport Hospital.
George was born in Renovo on July 5, 1930, the son of the late George E., Sr. and Helen Bratton Shilling.
He was a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph’s Catholic School of Renovo, where he was well known by the nickname “Gabby” and was proud to have the honor of being named captain of the basketball team.
Following graduation from high school, George attended Lock Haven State Teachers College until 1950 when he was called to serve in the United States Coast Guard. George served during the Korean War from 1950 until 1953.
George worked for Conrail Railroad as a Track Supervisor until his retirement after 47 years of service.
On June 1, 1990 at Woolrich United Methodist Church, he married the former Carol Whitman who survives.
George was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Lock Haven.
He was a past member of the Lock Haven Elks Lodge 182.
George was very passionate and an enthusiast of Notre Dame University Athletics. Most of all, George loved spending time with his family and enjoyed vacationing to the Outer Banks, Florida and of course, to Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Joseph, Mary (Tim) Lucas, Thomas, Michael (Stacy), Karen (Chris) Wertz, Sharon (Richard) VanEmburgh, and Brian (Carly); a daughter-in-law, Linda Shilling; two step-children, Jeffrey (Teena) and Corey (Susan) Rich; a sister, Mary Helen Garcia; sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 310 W. Water St., Lock Haven, Pa 17745 with Rev. Father Joseph Orr officiating. Private burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Renovo.
A viewing will be held on Monday morning prior to the Mass from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, Pa 17745.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Holy Spirit Parish of Lock Haven.
