Second quarter woes at 3A South Williamsport dooms Bucks

By Bees O’Brien

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT- Bucktail head coach Travis Fantaskey was not upset at all with his team’s performance Saturday afternoon at South Williamsport. The Bucks were taking on a strong, 2-0 3A program and if it weren’t for a second quarter slump, the Bucks would have downed the Mounties.

The Bucks commanded their much larger opponent throughout three quarters of the Saturday contest. Bucktail took command early with a 16-15 lead after one quarter.

The Bucks then fell in the second quarter slump by managing just 4 points to South’s 18. The big advantage by the Mounties gave South a 33-20 lead at the break.

The Bucks would get back in the groove in the second half. Both squads matched basket for basket in the third quarter and netted 18 points apiece. The Bucks then took the fourth quarter 20-18, but it wasn’t enough to eclipse the Mounties’ second quarter effort. South picked up the 69-59 win to improve to 3-0.

“I thought we played good today. We’ll be alright.” Said Fantaskey of his team’s 1-3 start. “ There’s a 5 or 6 game stretch coming up that we should be able to come away with wins.”

That stretch begins on Tuesday with a trip to Benton and then a home contest against winless St. John Neumann.

“We play a lot of 2A and 3A teams with a lot of district power points up for grabs.” Added Fantaskey “We’ll be okay.”

Brody Pentz led Bucktail with 18 points. Gavin Pick and Gary Whipp each dropped in 14 points for the Bucks.
