Renovo Loves Their Heart

By: Aaliyah McGowan, Bucktail Student
FARWELL -The National Honor Society (NHS) at Bucktail High School has partnered with the American Heart Association for the second year in a row to raise awareness and funds for the fight against heart disease. Every year NHS does a community service project and last year it was decided that partnering with the American Heart Association would be a great opportunity, as heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Last year, Bucktail students were able to raise $1,000 for the American Heart Association. This year, students hoped to raise even more.

The members of NHS along with advisor Kelly Bradley incorporated their ideas from last year and added new ideas to make it even better. The students decided to hold a ‘Red Out’ week during January 29th through February 2nd. Students would sell t-shirts, paper hearts, and hold halftime events at the varsity basketball game on February 2, 2018.

The American Heart Association provided shirts with the saying “Love Your Heart” on the back to be sold for $10, along with paper hearts for donations of $1. Shirts and paper hearts were sold to students, teachers, and members of the community throughout the week. Students hung posters and flyers around their school and community as well as did “Hoops For Heart” during halftime of the boy’s varsity basketball game on February 2, 2018. “Hoops For Heart” got people in the crowd involved. The Bucktail fans could pay $1 to shoot a layup, foul shot, and a three point shot. This year’s winner was 5th grader, Brody Pentz!

One of the goals of this year was to get Renovo Elementary involved. Principle Betsy Dickey helped to come up with the idea of a walking challenge. During recess that week, students participated in a tournament competition to see which class could walk the most laps. For every completed lap, students would get an elastic bracelet. These bracelets would be counted everyday and whichever class had the most elastic bracelets would be awarded extra physical education classes along with prizes provided by the American Heart Association. There were two winning classes this year, Mrs. Stimpson’s 1st grade class and Mrs. Casper’s 5th grade class!

All in all, it was another successful year for the NHS, and the American Heart Association. This year $1,182 was raised and donated to the American Heart Association. This would not have been possible without the support of the community, Advisor Kelly Bradley, Principle Betsy Dickey, and the student body!
