Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
It was after the resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus. Two of his Apostles, Peter and John, we’re on their way to the temple in Jerusalem to a prayer meeting.
There was a man who was lame from birth sitting at the gate of the temple asking for alms. When he saw Peter and John coming toward him he expected them to give him something.
“Silver and gold I do not have,” Peter said, “but what I have, I give to you.” And then he said, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6).
As Peter began to lift him up, his feet and ankles were strengthened. He entered the temple with Peter and John, “walking, and leaping, and praising God.”
When the people who saw the miracle wondered how it happened, Peter told them not to think it was by their power that the man was made to walk. It was by the name of Jesus. “And his name,” Peter said, “through faith in his name, has made this man strong.”
Peter later declared that there is no other name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
As the words of a new song remind us: “There is power in the name of Jesus; There is power, power in his name.”
