Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

As children in Sunday School, we were taught the story of David and Goliath. David was just a young lad. He was brave enough to Goliath, who was a giant.

It was the Lord who gave David the victory. He became the hero of the story, replacing the giant who had fallen.
Upon hearing the story of David and Goliath, a little boy was in awe of the height of the giant. He ran to his mother, saying “Mommie, I am as tall as Goliath; I am nine feet high!”

“What makes you say that?” his mother asked.

“Well,” he answered, “I made a little ruler of my own and measured myself with it, and I am just nine feet high exactly!”

Some one has pointed out that there are many people who follow the little boy’s method, measuring themselves by some rule of their own. The Word of God tells us about those who do just that.

“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” (II Corinthians 10:12).

God’s measuring standard is perfection. We have all fallen short of that. (Romans 3:23)
