Words Of Grace 9/2

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

When Israel was going through the wilderness God gave to his people “bread from heaven to eat” (John 6:31). They called it Manna.

Moses did not give them the bread. It was sent down from heaven from the father above.

In like manner, Jesus said, the Father gives us “the true bread from heaven” (v.32). Jesus himself is “the bread of God” who came down from heaven to give life to the world. (v. 33) He is “the bread of life” (v.35)

The people began to murmur because Jesus declared himself to be “the bread which came down from heaven” (v.41). Because they knew who his father and mother were, they wondered how he could have come down from heaven. (v.42)

When they refused to come to him, the bread of life, that they might have life, he said: “No man can come to me except the father who has sent me draw him.” (v. 44) And how does the father draw us?

When the Lord appeared to the prophet Jeremiah, he said, “yes, I have loved you with everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness have I drawn you” (31:3) The father draws us to Jesus with his loving kindness.

“Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, bless Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.”
