PIAA Says Fall High School Sports Remains a Go, for Now

Central Mountain football got its first workout on the newly resurfaced Malinak Stadium on Wednesday morning.

MECHANICSBURG – The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association on Wednesday offered a potentially qualified go-ahead for sports for state high schools this fall.

Following the July meeting of the board of the high school sports’ governing body, the PIAA announced that pre-season preparation can continue, stopped only by a future directive otherwise from state government.

The PIAA statement:

PIAA is moving forward with the normal start of the fall sports season unless otherwise directed by the Commonwealth. Heat acclimation for football will begin on August 10th and the first practice date for the remaining fall sports will begin on August 17th. Our focus is the health and safety of student athletes which is paramount in moving forward with athletics. Each member school has developed health and safety guidelines to allow athletics to continue as an important part of the school day. Participation in athletics has known health benefits, including promoting physical fitness and mental wellness which is necessary in a time of uncertainty for our student athletes.

PIAA is committed to providing a season for all sports in the upcoming school year and will be flexible if conditions would change.

Many high school football programs across the state have begun pre-season workouts, including at Bucktail and Central Mountain High Schools.
