PHOENIX WRESTLERS RALLY TO DEFEAT SHAMOKIN 40-25

SHAMOKIN- The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School fell behind 25-24 to the Indians of Shamokin with three bouts to go, but the Phoenix swept the final three matches and came away with a 40-25 win to improve to 11-8 on the season. 

Trailing 25-24 after the 107 pound bout, the Phoenix Hunter Berry (20-8) started the rally at 114, as he recorded a fall over the Indians’ Xavier Carr in 1:42 of the final period to put the Phoenix back in front at 30-25. Tobias Conoway (19-8) then recorded a 18-8 major decision over Logan Pensyl at 121 pounds to give the Phoenix a 34-25 and clinch the dual meet. Taylor Cantolina (11-14) then walked out and received a forfeit at 127 pounds to set the final at 40-25. 

The dual meet started at 139 pounds, as there was no match at 133. The Phoenix Wyatt Conoway (17-10) received a forfeit at 139 and then Jarren McCloskey (20-7) recorded a fall at 145 pounds and the Phoenix were out of the gate with a 12-0 lead. The Phoenix Dakota Jodun (15-9) lost a major decision at 152 pounds to cut the Phoenix lead to 12-4. 

Thayne Jefferies (7-3) then fell by fall to the Indians best wrestler in Chase Pensyl at 160 pounds and the Indians closed within two at 12-10. Pensyl is 22-5 this season and has 94 career wins to his credit thus far. The Phoenix then forfeited 172 pounds and the Indians took over the lead at 16-12. 

The Phoenix Brandon Galentine (6-16) put the Phoenix back up with a forfeit win at 189 pounds, which was followed by a pin from Lincoln Breon (12-4) at 215 pounds and Phoenix were now up 24-16. The Indians came back and Robert Whitmer recorded a fall over Koda Mincer (16-11) at 285 and Leroy Culvey (3-13) fell by fall at 107 pounds and all of sudden the Indians were up 25-24. That set the stage for the Phoenix rally to come away with the win. 

The Phoenix next action is next Tuesday, January 28th at home when they will host the Mountaineers of South Williamsport and then on Thursday, January 30th they will host the Green Hornets of Wellsboro.
