DEKALB, Ill. – Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) went 3-0 and powered his way to the 174-pound finals in leading the Lock Haven University wrestling team on Saturday’s Day 1 of the 2020 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships. By way of his spot in the 174 finals, Siegrist also qualified his spot in the 2020 NCAA Division I Championships later this month.

Saturday marked Lock Haven’s MAC Tournament debut. This is the first season in the MAC for LHU after last spring’s historic expansion that saw all the former Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) teams move over to the MAC.

Siegrist, a senior and four-year starter, qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever, and he will look to become LHU’s first-ever individual MAC Champion on Sunday.

Siegrist was one of two semifinalists as DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) pushed his way into the semis at 133 pounds.

Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Brock Port (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) are all still alive in the tournament, and will compete in Sunday’s consolation rounds as seven total Bald Eagles advanced to Day 2 action.

After Day 1, Lock Haven sits in fifth place with 54.5 points. Seven-time defending champion Missouri leads the team race with 112.5 points. Central Michigan is in second place (86 pts.), Northern Illinois is third (67.5 pts.) and Rider is fourth (66.5 pts).

Competing as the No. 5 seed at 174 pounds, Siegrist went 3-0. He opened the day with pin, before two decisions. Siegrist grinded out a tight 3-2 win in the quarterfinals and he took down Central Michigan’s’ Jake Lowell, 9-4, in the semifinals. In the finals, Siegrist will meet No. 3 seed Andrew McNally (Kent State).

At 133, Fehlman, the No. 4 seed, was 2-0, before falling to the No. 1 seed in the semifinals. Kent State’s Tim Rooney, the top-seed, slipped by the Bald Eagle’s 133-pounder, 4-2 (SV2) in the semifinal bout.

The tournament continues Sunday at 12 p.m. CDT/1 p.m. EST with consolation quarterfinal action.
