LHU Army ROTC Cadets Recognized with Scholarships, Contracts
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — The dedication of four Lock Haven University Army ROTC cadets recently was recognized during a contracting ceremony last month at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center.
Four LHU cadets received Army ROTC contracts, which include a monthly stipend. Three of those cadets also were bestowed Army ROTC scholarships during the ceremony, which will cover the cost of tuition and provide a monthly stipend and book allowance.
The Lock Haven University scholarship and contract recipients and their majors are: Parker McClellan, of Altoona, criminal justice; Steven Irwin, of New Cumberland, criminal justice; Olivia Samulewicz, of Kennett Square, health science/pre-PA; and Brennan Gleckner, of Canton, business administration.
“Here at The Haven, we have a strong focus, not only on honoring our military, but also on providing students with one of the best Army ROTC programs around,” said Dr. Robert Pignatello, LHU president. “We are fortunate to have skilled and knowledgeable faculty who train our students to become commissioned officers in the Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve and who prepare our cadets for a fulfilling military career.”
Besides their regular college activities and courses, ROTC cadets take classes on military science and leadership and engage in physical training three days a week in order to meet conditioning requirements. Each semester also includes a field training exercise.
“The Army ROTC program provides more college scholarships than any other program in America, with merit-based benefits going to about 15,000 students each year,” said Lt. Col. Jonathon Britton. “The total amount of scholarship benefits paid this year currently stands at over $370 million. A lot of ROTC scholarships only cover three years. When coupled with our high-level of cadet success rates, the ‘freshman full ride’ makes the Bald Eagle Battalion ROTC program one of the most appealing ROTC programs in the nation.”
Upon graduation, the cadets will be commissioned as second lieutenants and embark on specialized training in their Army branch. They will commit to four years of active duty or six years in the Army Reserve or National Guard.
“Our students achieve great academic success while developing lifelong leadership skills through our military science and ROTC program,” said Dr. John Nauright, dean of the Stephen Poorman College of Business, Information Systems and Human Services.
“We are committed to supporting the success of our ROTC students through providing equipment and facilities and in providing scholarship and other supports for our students.”
The Lock Haven University Army ROTC program serves as the host for the Bald Eagle Battalion, headquartered at Lock Haven University. Other members of the battalion are Lycoming College, Pennsylvania College of Technology and Mansfield University.
