Farmers Market Planned for Old Lamar Township School:

SALONA – Plans are proceeding for the sale of the old Lamar Township Elementary School to Kathryn and David Allgyer. The Keystone Central school board had agreed to the sale in October, the sale price $165,000.

It was learned at the Lamar Township supervisors meeting earlier this month that the Allgyers plan to operate a weekly farmers market from the existing building and farm the adjacent “Rote” baseball field acreage.

The sale approval in October had been unanimous but with contingencies. The building is along Long Run Road, midway between Salona and Rote. The plot is zoned residential, even though it has long housed a school building and adjacent ball field.

The school board had agreed to sell the property in 2017 and retained the services of local realtor Beth Riccardo. She attended the December supervisors meeting and said the supervisors agreed the Allgyer plans would be an acceptable use for the acreage without going through the rezoning process. She said the last obstacle to be cleared is sale approval from the state. She said that could be received as early as next month.

The school had closed at the end of the 2011-12 school year, its students transferred to Mill Hall Elementary. It had most recently been used for storage.

The last time the school district had sold a building was the former Sugar Valley High School in Loganton, the price $150,000 in 2013. It subsequently was converted to a grocery store and donut shop and returned to the tax rolls.
