School Board Discusses Study Abroad Opportunity, Board Communication Agreement, Event Security Pay Increase

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Superintendent Dr. Frank Redmon reminded the board the Central Mountain High School’s Drama Club will be performing Chicago this weekend. Tickets are available online or at the door.

During the Visitors portion of the meeting, a concerned parent spoke out about a Title IX issue regarding her daughter and another student at the high school.

Another visitor spoke, asking the board to allow an exemption to the foreign exchange student policy for a student interested in studying abroad at Central Mountain next year.

“She will be turning 15 during next school year but the district policy is that a student must be turning 16 during the year that they are attending school at Keystone Central School District,” she said.

She then provided information to the board about the student, hoping to aid in the board’s decision.

School Board members then discussed a proposed School Board Communication Agreement. The agreement could be a guide to align their efforts as a board and clarify how they communicate with each other, administration, staff, and the community.

The agreement was crafted to help guide board members with providing information to the school board, conveying questions to the board or superintendent, addressing community concerns, professionalism during board meetings, handling disagreements, and superintendent updates.

The Communication Agreement will be voted on during next week’s Voting Meeting.

Next, the school board discussed the Finance Committee Minutes, arguing that information found in the minutes were not an adequate reflection of what was done or spoken about.

“We discussed a scam that was perpetrated on the school district,” Board Member Chris Scaff said. “If it is not in the minutes, it didn’t happen.”

The Board then discussed a pay increase for KCSD Event Security, those who help with parking, people direction, and helping things work at events.

“We recommend increasing the hourly rate from $10 to $15 an hour,” the board agenda said.

The pay for event security has not been increased in over 10 years.

“I am glad that we can give them a little extra money,” Board Member Elisabeth Lynch said. “They seem to enjoy the job, and it is in a fun atmosphere.”

The Voting Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is available to be attended in-person, or on Zoom.
