What is a Chaffle
By Sandy Considine
The chaffle is just one of the latest trends, it’s a fun twist on breakfast or any meal that takes less than 10 minutes to make and only requires two ingredients: cheese and eggs. And if you happen to be following a keto diet, you’re in luck! These keto-friendly waffles are low in carbs, so you don’t have to wait for a special occasion or weekend brunch to get your fill. This guilt-free version is perfect for any day of the week. Though I do not follow or recommend a keto diet many people do. I make chaffles because I am Celiac. No flour is used and no sugar.
Flour and sugar are major culprits for weight gain and loss of appetite control. Flour and sugar have detrimental effects on hormonal balance, inflammation, brain fog, digestive issues and sluggish metabolism. You seriously won’t miss the flour and sugar at all, and you’ll be amazed at how much flavor you experience.
You know the saying “you eat with your eyes”. I will tell you some chaffle recipes are not appetizing looking…lol!!! but the smell and the taste will win you over.
You will need to purchase a Mini Waffle maker. They come as a single or a “4” mini waffle maker. I first bought the single and recently just purchased a “4”. I recommend buying a mini waffle maker by DASH.
Some chaffle tips: Always preheat your waffle maker and put a plate or foil beneath it to catch the mess from the oil spray. I recommend coconut oil spray if you are making a sweet chaffle and avocado oil if making a savory chaffle. Only spray the top since the cheese is on the bottom. This helps the chaffle not stick and makes them crispy.
Always place chaffle with the crispy side face down and put toppings on the softer side.
If the recipe calls for garlic powder, use garlic granules for more taste.
Mozzarella cheese is healthier than most cheeses and takes on the flavor of the other food. However, shredded parmesan cheese is great because it weighs less, and you can use more.
If a recipe calls for potatoes, bake them compared to boiling so there is not so much moisture. Vegan cheese will not get crispy so don’t waste your money. Make basic chaffles in bulk, refrigerate or freeze them.
The possibilities of chaffles are endless! Have fun! Experiment, you will learn quickly the ins and outs of making the perfect chaffle. Without A Waffle Maker – If you don’t have a waffle maker at all, you can cook this batter the same way you would a pancake. You won’t get the crunchy ridges, but they will still be delicious. Once you’ve mixed your batter, spread it onto a greased, hot nonstick pan over medium heat. (It’s typically too thick to pour)
Use 2 tablespoons of batter for small pancakes, or 1/4 cup for large ones. Cook until golden brown, then carefully flip and repeat on the other side.
