Obituary – John F. Matter

John F. Matter, 84, of Mill Hall, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025 at The Gatehouse Hospice, Williamsport, surrounded by his family.

Born April 11, 1940 in Loganton, he was the son of the late Reuben and Grace Brungard Matter.

John was a 1959 graduate of Sugar Valley High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965.

In 1967, he married the former Margaret Royer, who preceded him in death October 22, 2024.

John retired from Hammermill Paper Company after 35 years of service.

From carpentry work to repairing computers, John was a true handyman and jack-of-all-trades. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping with his family.

He is survived by two children, Leann (John) Li and Rodney (Samantha) Matter; eight grandchildren: Michala Matter, Tresa Matter, Katie Li, Nathaniel Li, Brendan Li, Andy Garbrick, Brandon Stiver and Jamie Stiver; a great-grandson, Kanden Rudy; two brothers; and four sisters.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Christina Stiver; one brother; and one sister.

Private graveside services at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Mill Hall, will be held at the convenience of his family.
