Phoenix golfers looking for continued improvement
LOGANTON, PA – Despite a difficult early schedule, the Sugar Valley High School golf team is looking to only get better as the season unfolds.
Head coach Tyler Koser said the program remains in building mode, “We have some inexperienced guys that we hope can develop over the next year or two in order to be competitive in the Mid Penn Athletic Conference, along with returning champion Benton, Montgomery, and Sullivan County. Last year we finished tied for second in the conference and we’re hoping to improve our position this year.”
Coach Koser notes there are five returnees to build around on a squad of nine. Senior Stu Meixel is taking the #1 spot for the Phoenix, with junior Bryer Martin settling into the #2 position. Senior Josh Miller-Mitchell, senior Sam Goldsmith, and sophomores Remmington Ripka and Ben Parker round out the rest of the starters. He said he is hoping to get some of the other younger and inexperienced golfers some course time as the season progresses.
Sugar Valley again calls Belles Springs its home course and the coach said he is very appreciative of their efforts to help not just his team, but other local teams as well. “They are very accommodating to us and other young golfers.”
The Phoenix schedule includes the 3rd annual Susquehanna River Rivalry held on Monday of this week at Belles Springs. Coach Koser said he was excited to keep that competition going, “Coach Lodek (Central Mountain) and Coach Schall (Jersey Shore) really have some great teams and I’m excited that we get to continue to golf those teams and have a measuring stick of where we are at as a team.”
Each year, Sugar Valley hosts a Mid Penn Athletic Conference match where Benton, Montgomery, and Sullivan County come to Belles Springs. This year, it will be on Tuesday, Aug. 29, starting at 2 p.m.
