Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

The Bible tells us about our need to be strong. Because we have no strength in ourselves, we cannot make ourselves stronger. We must be made strong by the Lord’s mighty power.

To be strong in the Lord we must put on the full armor of God. That enables us to stand against our enemy, the devil. (Ephesians 6:10,11)

We Stand upon the Word of God. The Word of God is “the truth.” (v.14) The Word of God is “the gospel of peace.” (v.15) The Word of God is “the sword of the spirit.” (v.17)

The Word of God is full of promises. Those promises, according to the beloved hymn, cannot fail. As we stand on the promises in God’s Word, we cannot fall.

Jesus assures us that when everything has passed away, his word “shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:5). That’s why the Bible is called the indestructible Word of God. Someone has put it down in this fashion:

Century follows century – there it stands.
Empires rise and fall and are forgotten – there it stands.
Dynasty succeeds Dynasty – there it Stands..
Kings are crowned and uncrowned – there it stands.
The Bible stands is the name of a hymn with this fitting ending: “I will plant my feet on its firm foundation, for the Bible stands.”
