Houston We Have A Winner! CMHS Senior and Nation-Wide Team Win NASA Contest

By Christopher Miller
CMHS Senior Gianna Renzo and her nation-wide team, aptly named Germaphobes, have won the 2020 NASA & TI Codes Contest.

Final results will be posted to the contest website later today and announced through various promotions with Texas Instruments (TI) @TICalculators and @NASASTEM social media channels.

Each team member will receive the following: TI-84 Plus CE or TI-Nspire CX II calculator, TI-Innovator Rover and TI-Innovator Hub, and official NASA swag.

High School teacher and STEM Club advisor Sue Hanna will receive a $250 Visa gift card, TI-Rover (to use with the calculator and Innovator Hub already provided to the team for their project), and NASA swag.

With the Johnson Space Center still closed to visitors due to the current COVID-19 situation, a representative from NASA will be in touch with all winning team members to assist with coordinating their trip to the space center in Houston.

Gianna and her team were tasked with creating a solution to aid the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Their robot, the Germaphobe, will be tasked with cleaning and sanitizing the space station keeping the astronauts busy with their own space projects and research.

Backed by the current raging pandemic, the idea was the brainchild of the team of 5 which is composed of high school students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Illinois.
