Lady Bucks Slay Lady Griffins
Busy Road Trip Looming

FARWELL – It had been two full weeks since the Bucktail Lady Bucks had played a game and you would expect to see lack of communication amongst the players. The only routine on this past Monday was the first day of school in the new year of 2014.
Coach Carl Gentzyel noted it would be hard to tell how the Lady Bucks would play after two weeks, let alone not being in school until Monday. That will throw them off because you know teenagers when there is no school. But the Lady Bucks were able to hold off the Lady Griffins from Sullivan County, still looking for their first win of the season, as the Lady Bucks won 52-43.
In the first quarter, it looked like the Lady Bucks were not going to miss a beat as Maria Morgan was finding her tall girls (Tiffany Werts and Hannah Shearer) off the baseline drive; both of them were finishing their buckets and Morgan having the hot hand, the Lady Bucks jumped out to a 17-12 lead to start the second quarter.
As Sullivan County adjusted on Werts and Shearer, Morgan started to find Alaina Tripp and Shae Cowfer in the middle of the key. Morgan was too strong on driving against the Lady Griffins as she scored 20 of her total 31 points in the first half as the Lady Bucks led 32-23 at the half.
Meanwhile coach Gentzyel was wondering what he needs to do to get the other Lady Bucks on putting the ball in the basket. “We continue to miss the opportunity under the baskets as they will come back to haunt us one of these times for the game. Even tonight, we allowed SC to hang around the entire game. Our defense was playing good but our missed shots would allow them another chance to score on their end.”
Sullivan County would get within five points in the third quarter but the Lady Bucks would answer right back on a run to extend the lead back to twelve in the fourth quarter. Sullivan County called timeout at the 6:44 mark. Coach Gentzyel then asked the Lady Bucks to slow the game down and keep control of the ball as Sullivan County tried to play hard defense without fouling as the game ended. Werts ended up with 6 rebounds as Morgan added 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
JV Game saw the Lady Bucks fall hard to the Lady Griffins as the score was 41-16 Sullivan County.
Next up for the Lady Bucks is a rematch against Austin at Austin on Wednesday Jan. 8 starting at 6:00 PM. Lady Bucks won the first match-up a month ago 65-49 as Morgan scored her career high of 44 points.
The junior Morgan is now 30 points shy of the Lady Buck career scoring mark of 1,286 set by Holly Edwards in 2000. It is now more than likely Morgan will establish a new school mark somewhere in the vicinity of Austin or at the next road game on Friday as the Lady Bucks will travel down Interstate 80 to Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech for a 6:00 PM tip-off. On Monday Jan. 13th the Lady Bucks will travel to Montgomery for a 6:00 PM start. Next Wednesday Jan. 15th it will be a rematch at St. John Neumann at 6:00 PM. Yes, the Lady Bucks are busy playing ball in the month of January and there is no time to rest.
