Sugar Valley dominates Montgomery in major Mid Penn shakeup

By Bees O’Brien

LOCK HAVEN- The Sugar Valley baseball resurgence continued on Thursday afternoon at Taggart Park. The Phoenix belted out 18 hits on their way to a convincing 13-7 win over Mid Penn Conference leaders Montgomery.

The Red Raiders entered Thursday’s contest with the Phoenix undefeated within the conference and already owned a quick 15-0 win over Sugar Valley on their own field earlier this season.

8 different Sugar Valley players collected multiple hits in the Sugar Valley’s second win of the week.

Montgomery’s 3-0 lead after 2 innings was short lived. Sugar Valley scored a single run in the bottom of second inning, but another run from the Red Raiders in their half of the third inning had Montgomery feeling confident, but a 4-run third inning and another 3-run fourth inning burst helped the Phoenix put the game away.

The Phoenix led 8-7 before scoring 5 runs in their last two at bats to ice the game.

The win by Sugar Valley has given new life to St. John Neumann in their quest for a league crown.

Bentley Andrus and Dakota Jodun combined to strike out 6 batters on the hill for Sugar Valley.

Bryer Martin and Brody Swanger tallied 3 hits each. Martin had a double and a triple, while all of Swanger’s base knocks were doubles. Grayson Hastings and Lincoln Breon chipped in 2 hits as did Toby Conoway and Conner Ohl. All four each had doubles.

Sugar Valley will be looking for their fifth win of the season when they host Sullivan County on Saturday at 11am.
