‘Sock Ruins Wildcat Senior Night, 87-68

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Visiting Loyalsock ruined Central Mountain’s Friday night Senior Night contest, the Lancers strong to the hoop all night long in a convincing 87-68 win.

The Lancers are now 15-5 and the Wildcats drop to 11-7. The two teams could very well meet again next Wednesday in a Heartland Conference postseason semifinal to be played at Shikellamy High School. Pairings will be announced early next week.

For veteran Lancer coach Ron Insinger it was his 899th career win. The state’s all-time winningest coach will go for No. 900 Saturday against Athens. His team could not play much better than it did against Central Mountain. They attacked the basket from the game’s start and raced to a 19-6 lead. The Wildcats would battle back to tie the score at 26-all early in the second period but ‘Sock went on a 16 point run, up 42-26 late in the half and maintained a double-figure lead for the rest of the contest.

Wildcat coach Tyler Bardo noted the two teams had similar styles, but “They (Loyalsock) attacked and broke the press while we sat back.” He said his team “got away from ourselves” in not attacking the basket. The Wildcats were pressured into 22 turnovers.

The game was the third in a row CM played without veteran guard Trevor Hanna. One of the senior members of the squad, he was in uniform for the first time since injuring a knee several games ago but did not play. He is expected back before the season’s end. Bardo did not use his absence as an excuse and said it presented an opportunity for others to develop their skills.

Junior Collin Jones led the Wildcats with 26 points, Matt Storeman had 14, Izzy McCann with 13 and Jake Skrtich off the bench with 12. Trevor Adair added 2. Senior members honored before the game were Hanna, Storeman, McCann, Adair and Addison Thomas.

There will be no rest for Central Mountain as the season winds down: Saturday a 7:30 p.m. contest at Mifflinburg, at Williamsport Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Shik for the PHAC semifinal game Wednesday, Feb 14 and at Huntingdon Friday, Feb. 16. The District 6 Class 5A playoffs will begin the week of Feb. 19, opponents and dates to be announced next week.
