LOCK HAVEN — Calling the new unit a “a great day for the community,” officials at Lock Haven Hospital Wednesday evening introduced Graham Meadows Memory Care Community, a new section at the hospital’s Haven Skilled Rehabilitation and Nursing wing.

Dr. Raj Patel, chief of the hospital’s medical staff, termed the new unit “a blessing not only for patients but their family members.” Patel was part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the entrance to the new wing, the scissors wielded by Amy Comstock, Nursing Home Administrator.

The unit is designed for the needs of Alzheimer’s and dementia residents, providing what speakers said would be “the safety, comfort and well-being” of those residents. They said the newly refurbished Graham wing includes programs designed for those with early stage dementia and those with more advanced memory loss.

Hospital chief executive officer Steven Davis said there will be an emphasis on meaningful interaction with residents. He said the planning began a year ago when it was determined there was a need for such a facility in the community.

Jeff Johns, business development director at the hospital, said the new memory care unit is named in recognition of Lee and Bessie Graham. The Grahams had donated the land for construction of the current hospital and were later hospital patients. They also established a trust leading to the Lee and Bessie Graham Scholarship program which annually awards scholarships to students seeking a career in nursing.
