State Police Warn of Scam

LAMAR TOWNSHIP — Local state police are warning area residents of a scam in which a caller asks for money, this in the wake of the recent shooting in northeastern Pennsylvania which left one state trooper dead and a second in critical condition.

Police today issued a statement on the scam:

“On 9/15/14 PSP Lamar received information that an organization called ‘The State Police Assistance Program’ was making calls from a phone with a 570 area code asking citizens to donate money in the wake of the recent tragedy of fallen police officers. They were asking for donations of $100 or $50. The voice you will hear is from a computer based telephone and may be hard to understand. If anyone receives this phone call please do not donate as we the PA State Police do not solicit money. Anyone who receives a phone call please contact Tpr Maggs at PSP Lamar at 570-726-6000.”

Meanwhile state police in Pike County continue to investigate the shooting last Friday night outside the Blooming Grove barracks. They said today they believe the assailant used a .308-caliber rifle and probably lived in the area of the shooting which they described as an ambush.
