Huskies take season-opener from Wildcats, 41-6
LEWISTOWN, PA – The Mifflin County Huskies scored early and often Friday night, on the way to a season-opening 41-6 win over visiting Central Mountain.
The Huskies took charge after the Wildcats were unable to get off a punt on their first possession, taking over on the CM 27-yard-line. Moments later Deakon Schaeffer would score the first of his four touchdowns on the night, going in from two yards out midway through the opening period.
Mifflin County went on to score touchdowns on four of their six first half possessions, Schaeffer’s running complimented by the passing of senior quarterback Landon Eichorn. The home team opened a 28-0 halftime lead.
Central Mountain mounted its one successful scoring drive after forcing a Mifflin County punt to start period three. Senior quarterback Thomas Sprague netted the score with a two-yard run to cap off a 57-yard drive. After a failed extra point try, MC led 28-6.
Schaeffer would score his third of four t-d’s later in period three and Eichorn tossed his second of two touchdown passes to send the game into the mercy rule as the final period started, the score at the time 41-6.
It was the first game for new Wildcat head coach Travis Thompson. He noted some early Wildcat adversity put his team in the hole but said “one game is not going to define our season” and he “saw some good things.”
Rocco Serafini led the Wildcat ground attack with 36 yards, Osten Lindsey with 29 and Sprague with 27. Sprague completed seven passes for 124 yards. The Huskies’ Schaeffer finished with 101 yards.
The Wildcats will look to bounce back next Friday, Sept. 1, their home opener with Bloomsburg. Bloom fell to Danville, 57-6, on Friday.
