Down River

In the Meantime

By John Lipez

In the Meantime:
It will be more than a few days til the May 16 election and then we’ll know the final pairings for the November election. So far things have been pretty quiet on the local election front and we do want to thank the four candidates for Clinton County Commissioner who answered The Record questionnaire about their views, responses you can find in the A section of this very same newspaper and online when they go up on therecord-online.

In the meantime, more than troubled by continuing horrific news on the national scene, how about a brief respite and spend some Down River column space and accentuate the positive; all the good things going on around us?
In no particular order:

The championships by the Central Mountain Majorettes and Colorguard at the Atlantic Regional Championships…

Positive steps in music in the Keystone Central School District. This would include 30 or more young musicians at Central Mountain Middle School and High School who did well in their recent visit to Music in the Parks in Hershey; and word that Bucktail High School’s new music instructor Brandon Kahley is in the process of restarting the Bucktail Marching Buck Band (he’s already done great things with the Buck Drum Line)…

The recent Mountain of Hope Trail Challenge, a spring trek through trails meandering through Nittany Valley’s East end, a half marathon and a 5K race with a field of both Amish and “English” runners…

And the even more recent Bridge-to-Bridge run to honor local veterans, a race featuring retired Navy SEAL/war hero Steve “Turbo” Toboz back in town to join the Sunday jaunt from Mill Hall to Lock Haven…

The soon-to-be constructed Lock Haven Skatepark at the city’s venerable Hoberman Field complex; the park looks to be a drawing card for skateboarding enthusiasts from across central Pennsylvania…

The continued positive work of Downtown Lock Haven Inc., spearheaded by Downtown Manager Kira Rosamilia; the downtown alive as it hasn’t been since the days when a police officer was needed to assist shoppers crossing Main Street on busy Friday nights more than half a century ago…

The always well received Renovo Community Chorus concert held this past Sunday…

And let’s not forget last Sunday’s Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven pancake breakfast, the spring edition; with vehicles and airplanes coming from all over to sample the lightest pancakes in the history of the world…

And looking ahead:
Two anniversary events this summer: the 25th year for Lock Haven’s Summer Concert Series and the 50th anniversary for the Clinton County Fair (and let’s not forget the next edition of the Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven coming to the Piper Memorial Airport next month)…

Also next month downtown Lock Haven will be the site for the annual Best of Clinton County celebration, Saturday, June 17 the exact date, with a parade, a concert and a lot more…

August will see another LH Jams in the downtown, another growing event, a growing draw for Lock Haven, art and music taking center stage…

A newly created Veterans Park across from the Clinton County Courthouse, by all early accounts a most appropriate setting for those who served the United States in past military conflicts; looking for a dedication ceremony in August if everything remains on schedule, Down River has been told…

The list goes on and on (the Clinton County Economic Partnership/Visitors Bureau does a great job of posting all the happenings available on social media). So if discouraged about the news on the national scene (how can you not be?), open a window, enjoy the fresh May breezes and then venture out and see what Clinton County has to offer. Take a break; you’ve got a lot to choose from.
