Lady Spartans sweep Sugar Valley in doubleheader

HUGHESVILLE- The Lady Phoenix of Sugar Valley braved the cold and rain on Saturday to travel to Hughesville and meet up with the Lady Spartans in a District IV softball doubleheader.

The hosts greatly improved their chances of qualifying for the District IV 3A playoffs by sweeping Sugar Valley 16-1 and 13-3 to up their season mark to 5-6.

In game one Lily Mundrick’s run in the top of the first inning would give Sugar Valley an early 1-0 lead, but the lead would be short lived. Evangeline Andrus’ RBI single to score Mundrick would be followed by a barrage of runs from Hughesville.

The Lady Spartans offense was firing on all cylinders. They would score 4 runs in the first inning, 8 more in the second inning and cap off the game with a pair of runs in both the bottom of the third inning and bottom of the fourth inning to set the final.

Andrus’ first inning hit would be the only base hit allowed by Hughesville in game one.

In game 2 Hughesville opened up with a 3-0 lead on the Lady Phoenix, but Sugar Valley would storm back to tie things up at 3-3. Hughesville would then score 10 straight unanswered runs to set the final at 13-3.

Cheyenne Weaver led the bats for Sugar Valley with a pair of hits. Brynn Swanger added a double and Lily Mundrick,Olivia Clester and Ellynn Scarborough also collected hits in the loss.

The 2-9 Lady Phoenix will next set their sites on Benton in a Mid Penn Conference road trip set for Monday afternoon, before they host Bucktail on Tuesday.
