Top Hat – Day One: Short-handed Wildcats advance eight to quarterfinals

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Central Mountain wrestling team had a decent first day at the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament on Friday. But with no entrants at three weights, the Wildcats found themselves in seventh place in the 24-team field. Montoursville led after the first day with 61.5 points, Connellsville second with 61; Central Mountain in 7th with 49 points.

Of the ten CM starters, eight picked up wins in the round of 16. These included top seeds Dalton Perry at 139 pounds and Griffin Walizer at 145 pounds; both notched 18-3 technical falls.

The Serafini brothers were among four Wildcats to secure pins; senior Gino at 160 pounds and junior Rocco at 189. Other round of 16 falls came from freshman Jaggar Pardoe who was trailing in his varsity debut by a 7-1 score when he got the fall at 114 pounds and senior Brayden Blackwell at 285 pounds.

Winning regular decisions were senior Braylen Corter at 152 and sophomore Jacob Weaver at 172. Two starters remain alive in the consolations freshman Collin Bauman at 107 pounds and Dakota McDermott at 215 pounds. Also still alive in the consolations are back-ups Hunter Donley at 152 and Bryce Brungard at 172. Back-ups eliminated in the second round of consolations were Luke Ananea at 145 and Giovanni Tarantella at 215.

Central Mountain had no entries at 121 and 127 pounds and junior standout Luke Simcox could not make weight at 133 pounds.

Head coach Biff Walizer said he liked the effort he saw from the squad and saw areas that need to be addressed. He lamented the condensed preseason period this year and said it was difficult to be fully prepared as a result.

The quarterfinals and semifinal round will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the parade of champions at 5 p.m. and the first, third and fifth place bouts set for 5:15 p.m. Therecord-online will provide audio streaming of the early Saturday rounds with audio/video coverage of the final round.
