LHU wrestling caps opening day of 2022 NCAA Championships
DETROIT, Mich. – The Lock Haven University men’s wrestling team wrapped up day one of the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Thursday in Detroit. Session two saw all five Bald Eagles in action and a number of Bald Eagles put the finishing touches on a tremendous season. Two of the Bald Eagle contingent remain alive in Friday’s consolations.
Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima (NC State)) gathered the lone win for the Bald Eagles in the morning session and faced off against No. 1 seeded Nick Suriano of Michigan on Thursday evening looking for a spot in the quarterfinals. Noto trailed 2-1 after the first period and tied things up early in the second with another escape to make it 2-2. Noto fended off the No. 1 seed’s attacks for the majority of the second period, but allowed a late takedown which turned the tide of the match. Suriano notched a pair of takedowns in the third, and Noto’s incredible win streak came to an end with a 7-3 decision. Noto will meet Missouri’s Noah Surtin in the consolation wrestlebacks Friday morning. Surtin was seeded No. 18 heading into the championships.
Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski), the 25th ranked wrestler in the nation, notched an impressive win in the consolations over No. 24 Sam Schuyler of Iowa State. After a deadlocked first period, Schuyler earned an escape to take a 4-3 lead into the final period. The Bald Eagles’ 285-pounder turned it on in the final period and secured an early escape before muscling his way into two third-period takedowns to take home an impressive 8-3 decision and move on in the wrestlebacks. Reid will meet Virginia Tech’s 10th-seeded Nathan Traxler in Friday morning’s session.
Ben Barton (Louisville, Ky./Trinity (Campbell)) dropped his wrestleback with Markus Hartman of Army in a hard-fought 9-6 battle. Barton caps his stellar career as a three-time national qualifier with 70 career wins after going an impressive 25-9 in 2021-22.
Ashton Eyler (Millersburg, Ohio/Claymont High (Iowa Central CC)) also saw his season come to a close in a 6-3 decision against Penn’s Lucas Revano. Eyler led the Bald Eagles with 32 wins in his first season in the Crimson and White and posted a 32-11 record on the year.
DaShawn Farber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth High School) dropped his consolation bout against No. 30 Marshall Keller of Princeton by an 11-0 major decision. Farber closes his freshman campaign at 16-16.
