Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

The Apostle Peter, in his Second Epistle, wrote about how there are some things in the scriptures that are hard to understand. Because the Bible is “hard to be understood,” the unlearned twist the words to their own destruction. (3:16)

We don’t have to understand everything in the Bible. We just need to believe. Faith, according to Hebrews 11:1, is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

It is through faith that we are able to understand that the world was made by God. (11:3) Without faith it is impossible to please God. He that comes to God must believe that he is, that he is God.(v.6)

Evangelist D. L. Moody was once approached by a man who wanted an explanation of a difficult passage in the Bible.

“How do you explain this verse?” he asked Moody. “I can’t explain it,” Moody admitted to him.

“Well how do you understand it then?”

“I don’t understand it,” Moody replied.

The questioner then said “you must not believe it.” “Oh yes,” said Moody “I do believe it. I believe many things I don’t understand and can’t explain.”
