A Recipe for Success: Blonde Girl Bakery
By Chris Miller
“I was looking for something more than a 9-5 job,” said Blonde Girl Bakery Owner Katie Glunk. “Sometimes I take classes online to learn about decorating, but it can be very overwhelming at times…you see, something that is always running in the back of my mind is if you are not building your own dream, you are building someone else’s.”
Building a bakery business is very overwhelming, especially if you are watching television shows about baking during this time of the year, but for Katie it is something that she enjoys especially since she has been learning from her mother for a very long time. Katie takes orders by phone and online and delivers all orders.
There are some things that she did back then in the 90s that are still consistent today, and there are other things that she does one way and I do another,” Katie explained. “It is a very innovative industry that is always changing.”
Katie found a niche early on the creation of her business. “Decorating birthday cakes, bridal cakes and baby shower cakes is definitely the niche that I found in the local area,” she explained. “But the number one thing people order from me are custom decorated cookies and cupcakes.”
As Katie explained, the “Monster Cookie” as she as aptly named it, comes in a box of 8 which tends to weigh over 2 pounds and are baseball-sized with a crispy outside and a gooey center. “I made a Monster Cookie once that had M&M candies, oatmeal, and peanut butter,” she mentioned.
But baking cookies and cakes was not always what Katie had in mind for a career.
“I have a Music degree from Mansfield University and my focus was on singing with a Minor in Business,” she explained. “When I graduated I taught voice and piano lessons at the Uptown Music Collective and then sold jewelry at the former CO2 store in downtown Lock Haven.”
“I never thought I would be a baker in a million years,” she said laughingly. “I thought that I would be a teacher
So just what is Katie’s recipe for success? “Consistency is always number one,” she explained. “Getting up at the same time every day is so hard some times, but I have my routine down now.” “Mix in some clever marketing, thanks to my business degree and background,” Katie said. Fold in some flavor, which Katie says, “it does not matter how beautiful an item is…if it isn’t tasty, then it doesn’t matter.” Lastly, bake-in a little bit of practice. “When I think I have something down, I learn that I can work harder to master new skills like piping, perfecting recipes, decorating, and being creative with cookies and cookie cutters,” she said.
