Central Mountain swim teams successful at Mount Carmel

MOUNT CARMEL, PA – The Central Mountain Wildcat swim teams travelled to Mount Carmel Monday afternoon to take on the Red Tornadoes.  At the end of the meet, the girls’ team brought home a 92-46 win.  The boys’ team fell 58-24; however that 24 point total means that once again the boys won every event they entered.

The girls’ 200 Medley Relay team of Maddie Bair, McKenna Fox, Ana Persun and Hannah Brian kicked off the winning for the Wildcats, taking the relay by almost 20 seconds.  Bair followed that up with an impressive win in the 200 Freestyle, taking the race by 27 seconds.  Hannah Brian and Chrissie Smith then went 1-2 for the Wildcats in the 200 Individual Medley.  Up next was the 50 Freestyle, which was anything but the runaway the previous races had been.  Morgan Brian found herself a body length behind at the turn, and despite a strong finish kick she was out-touched by just 6/100ths of a second, settling for second place.

Freshman Ana Persun put on what had to be the most impressive performance of the night in the next 2 races.  Persun found herself entered in the 100 Butterfly, followed by the 100 Freestyle.  Unfortunately for her, due to both schools having small boys’ teams, there was no boys’ 100 Butterfly between Persun’s 2 races.  Undeterred, she proceeded to win the 100 Butterfly, climb from the pool back onto the starting blocks, and win again in the 100 Freestyle.

Next up, Hannah Brian won the 500 freestyle with a season-best time, followed by Autumn Garman in 2nd.  The girls’ 200 Freestyle Relay team of Bair, Morgan Brian, Hannah Brian, and Persun continued the winning, with Bair following up shortly after with a win in the 100 Breaststroke.  The 400 Free Relay team of Autumn Garman, Smith, Fox, and Morgan Brian then capped the evening by winning the meet’s final event.

“I couldn’t be more proud” stated CM Head Coach Scott Bair.  “These kids obviously love to swim.  I haven’t heard a single complaint about travelling for practice or not having any home meets.  They’re swimming, they’re having fun, and they’re being successful.  Times are getting better every week.  That’s exactly what we want to see right now.”

On the boys’ side, the team considers the meet a “win”, even if they did end up on the short end of the final score.  “The boys put up 24 points” said assistant coach Nolan Dale.  “That’s 4 wins in 4 events.  We know we can’t win most meets.  We look to win events, and the guys won everything they swam tonight.”  Leisher Gugino won the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke, while Parker Orndorf won the 50 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle.  “The boys are putting up great times” said Dale.  “Parker already has one team record this year, and there are others that are in reach for both of them.  We expect big things from them through the end of the season.”

The Wildcat swimmers will continue their daily trips to Renovo to train, preparing for an upcoming meet against Jersey Shore Tuesday, Feb. 16.
