Central Mountain Swimmers Fall To Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, PA – The Central Mountain boys and girls swim teams traveled to Bloomsburg Wednesday evening to take on the Huskies. After a hard-fought meet and several outstanding individual swims, both teams suffered their first losses of the year.

According to Assistant Coach Carol Matheny, “The girls’ meet was a lot closer than the 94-77 final score. Blooomsburg has a dive team, which is included in the final swim score. Divers gave Bloomsburg 13 points, which left the actual head-to-head swim score 81-77.”

Head Coach Scott Bair was quick to point out that “Even early in the season, the girls are really starting to work together as a team.” The 200 Free Relay team of Autumn Garman, Christina Smith, McKenna Fox, and Morgan Brian came from behind to win by over 4 seconds, while the 400 Free Relay team of Madison Bair, Autumn Garman, Hannah Brian and Ana Persun took the lead from the start and held off a strong Bloomsburg team to win by just over 2 seconds. Bair also gave praise to the newer, young swimmers on his team, including Eva Jones, Jocelyn Sproat, and Haley Burrows. “They have very little experience swimming at the high school level, but they’re improving every week and learning quickly. In close meets, the points they contribute even with 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes can be the difference between a team win and a loss. They’re an important part of our team, and they’ll continue to get better as the year goes on.”

Other winners on the night were Hannah Brian in the 50 Freestyle and McKenna Fox in the 100 Breaststroke.

The Wildcat boys suffered an 89-22 loss, but, as Assistant Coach Nolan Dale explained, “Bloomsburg has a full team of boys, while we have 2 swimmers. It’s a numbers game, and we know going into these situations that we’re not going to win as a team. It’s impossible. We’re looking for individual event wins.”

If Coach Dale was looking for individual wins, he had to be very happy with the performance of the 2 Wildcat swimmers. In 4 contested events, Parker Orndorf easily won the 100 Freestyle by over 4 seconds, and dominated the 100 Backstroke, pulling away to a 15 second win. In the 100 Breaststroke, Leisher Gugino used an awesome comeback in the final 25 yards to out-touch the competition by only 5/100ths of a second. Gugino also finished 2nd in the 200 Freestyle.
Both teams now stand at 1-1 on the season. The Wildcats will swim twice next week, hitting the water at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 26 at Central Columbia and 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 in Danville.
