Slow Start Costly for Lady ‘Cats, falling to DuBois, 39-32

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Eager to secure a win, the Lady Wildcats got off to a slow start in the early going of their game with DuBois falling to the Lady Beavers 39-32 in a hard-fought effort. The effort in the game by Central Mountain wasn’t a total loss as the experience became a teachable moment for the squad to take their next step.
“I jumped into this understanding it’s a long process,” Baker Explained, “We have a long way to go, but the nice thing is we are able to use this as an example to tell the girls these are the little things at practice … getting down to the details of knowing your assignments on all occasions, knowing where you’re going to be in certain situations, going strong to the basket so you are making those layups in practice.”
Central Mountain trailed DuBois only 6-3 at the end of the first period, though there were plenty of opportunities offensively to change their fortune. The Lady Wildcats were taking their shots, unfortunately every attempt was off the mark. It wasn’t until the the 3:40 mark in the first quarter when Avery Baker finally broke the seal with a shot from downtown to give CM a 3-1 lead. That lead would evaporate seconds later when DuBois answered back Wirth e trey of their own. Fortunately for the Lady Wildcats, DuBois was experiencing low offensive production of their own.
“I thought we had opportunities in the first half,” Baker said reviewing the early going of the game, “By our count, we missed 8 layups in the first half. We were down 18-10. Conceivably, we could have been up 8 instead of down 8. That’s our growing pain.”
In the second quarter DuBois stepped up that production while Central Mountain was still struggling with the Lady Beavers outpacing the hosts 12-7 and a 18-10 half-time lead. In-all the Lady ‘Cats missed 8 layups in the first half.
“The negative part is we lost another close one at home,” said CM head coach, Scott Baker, “We had the opportunity to make a couple plays, here or there, and come out with a win. The Positive side is we’re getting close.”
In the second half Central Mountain stepped up their game keeping pace with DuBois 12-12 though DuBois was still leading 30-22 heading into the final period.
CM outscored DuBois in the final period 10-9, running out of clock before they could erase the deficit.
Avery Baker ended with 9 total points in the game to lead Central Mountain followed by Quinlynn McCann with 6 and Alyssa Fisher had 5 points on the night. Olivia Anastos and Morgan Wetzel had 4 points each while Mia Kopysciansky and Summer Flanagan contributed 2 points each.
Central Mountain will next see action on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018 with the JV game slated for 2:30 p.m. and the varsity game to follow.
