Lady Wildcats Come up Short against Milton, 46-40

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Almost may count in a friendly game of horse shoes, but in high school basketball … not so much. A young Lady Wildcat team learned a tough lesson tonight when they were edged by a scrappy Milton team, 46-40.

Central Mountain has already made solid progress in a short period of time, but much more work remains for them to achieve their goals.

Everything was going the Lady ‘Cats way in the early going when they built a 10-6 lead, then Milton responded in the closing minutes of the period, trailing the hosts, 12-10.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled to convert shots into points during the first four minutes, trading rebounds and turnovers along the way. Then both squads settled in and began to finish on their shots with CM getting past the Lady Black Panthers, 8-7 to hold a 20-17 lead at the break.

Then in the third quarter, Milton found their rhythm, outpacing Central Mountain, 22-13 to give the Lady Panthers a 39-33 lead.

In the final period, CM tried to rally but Milton kept pace with both teams only mustering 7 points each to make the 46-40 final score.

“We’re competing and that is the first step, after an 0-22 season last year, they’re still trying to figure out how to win,” said CM head coach, Scott Baker of hits team’s effort in their second game of the season, “We had some opportunities tonight and let one slip away. Competing is the first step in the process and that is a positive step,” Baker explained.

Although there was significant improvement in the game tonight for the Lady Wildcats, the coaching staff understands there is much more work to do.

“We’re going to continue to work on every aspect of the game to raise the skill level both offensively and defensively,” said Baker of the path forward.

Leading the way for Central Mountain tonight was Avery Baker with 16 points, bookending a pair of 3-pointers around 5 field goals. Mia Kopysciansky had 8 points with Morgan Wetzel and Quinlynn McCann scoring 6 points each and Madyson Smith contributing 4 points.

Defensively, 3 Lady ‘Cats accumulated 4 would by games end and as a team they sent Milton to the penalty stripe 10 times in the second half that accounted for 12 of the Lady Panther points in that half.

Next up, Central Mountain (0-2, 0-1) will be on the road for another PHAC contest at Danville on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018.
