Genealogical Society Publishes Historic Lock Haven Maps

LOCK HAVEN – For the first time the public will have the opportunity to own historic maps of Lock Haven, Flemington, and Lockport from the mid 19th century and at the same time assist two local non-profit organizations.

The Clinton County Genealogical Society has published its Lock Haven Historical Atlas, a compilation of the 1857 McKinney & Bonwill Map and the 1869 Richie & Stranahan Map of Lock Haven. The only copies known to exist of either map are located in the Ross Library, and the Society determined several years ago that they were important historical resources worthy of publication.

Because of the unwieldy size of the maps, after they were photographed gratis by Josh Grimes of Grimestone Photography in Lock Haven, the Society arranged the maps in sections for printing as an atlas. The maps contain the names of all residents and businesses at the time they were produced, and are richly embellished with numerous images of local historic buildings in their heyday. All names appearing on the maps have been transcribed and indexed for easy searching. The atlas also includes an image of the 1833 lot map of Lock Haven.

The atlas was created with the assistance of numerous volunteers from the Society. A brief history of Lock Haven and of each historic building was contributed by local historian Lou Bernard of the Ross Library.

After payment of the costs of printing, the proceeds from the sale of each atlas will be shared equally between the Ross Library and the Clinton County Genealogical Society.
The atlas can be ordered by sending a check for $40 plus sales tax and $4 shipping to the Clinton County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 393, Lock Haven, PA 17745.
