United Way Sports Night/Auction Friday

River Road’s Red Barn the Site

ccuway85th600LOCK HAVEN – If you have a need for a brick house, the third annual Clinton County United Way Sports Night and Fine Arts Auction might be your place; if you’re looking for a George Stefanski painting of Boom Island, this Friday’s Sports Night/Fine Arts Auction might be the place.

County United Way executive director Angela Harding has promised a unique evening for the sports fan and the art lover, the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. at a new venue, the Red Barn on the Island Road east of Lock Haven.

Harding and her committee have compiled an eclectic mix of items for auction, one of the more unusual offerings a red brick home, as is, in South Renovo. Others up for bid include Stefanski’s original painting of Boom Island, a week’s vacation to Rodanthe Beach in North Carolina and original jewelry designed by Phil Reeder and celebrating the county’s 175th anniversary.

There also will be considerable sports memorabilia for bidding, among them Phillies, Yankees and Pirates tickets.

The sports theme will also see announcement and recognition of this year’s United Way sportsman of the year, veteran Central Mountain High School wrestling coach Doug Buckwalter.
Harding termed Buckwalter “an amazing coach; he success isn’t just shown with wins and losses, but the determination, work ethic and pride he instills in his teams, his gym classes and the student body at Central Mountain.”

She thanked Jeff and Christina Frank for making the historic Red Barn available for this year’s event. She said they have maintained the barn’s original integrity while making updates allowing for special events such as Friday’s auction.

Harding said appropriate dress would be “smart casual,” in that jeans, khakis, dresses and skirts would all be appropriate. “I would probably recommend not wearing stiletto heels. The floor of the barn is the original planks.”

“The money we raise will be used to support programs in Clinton County through our Partner Agencies,” she said. “We currently fund over 25 programs and hard 17 partners. 16 of those programs directly affect children in Clinton County.”

The event has raised $70,000 over the last two years.

Harding said “hundreds of people make this event possible.” She said from the generosity of businesses and individuals to the United Way board of directors and volunteers it “truly exemplifies the term ‘Live United.’”

Tickets to the event are $30 and cover food and beverage; additional information is available by calling the United Way at 570-748-7856.
