Free mulch event at Bald Eagle Township, new Verizon cell tower, other items on Supers agenda

By Christopher Miller

Over three dozen people came forward Saturday morning to take their part in Bald Eagle Township’s “Free Mulch” event.

Free to everyone, not only township residents, the brown mulch pile is located behind the township building at 12 Fairpoint Road in Mill Hall.

“People took a significant amount from the pile,” a supervisor said.

The pile remains and is available on a first come, first serve basis. Though no more Saturday’s are being planned for mulch loading into trucks and trailers, township employee assistance to load mulch will be at a minimum, so be sure to bring a crew and some shovels.

Prior to the meeting, representatives from Colliers Engineering & Design and TowerCo met with township supervisors to discuss their proposed project to construct a new Verizon cell phone tower at 169 Adams Mountain Road which sits between Sugar Run Road and Lusk Run Road.

The area is already zoned agricultural, and the plans in place call for a 50′ x 50′ “fenced telecommunications compound,” according to site plans. The proposed tower from grade-level to the top of the lightning rod will rise to a total of 155′ over Bald Eagle Township.

In other news, the township received a $5,140 grant from the county liquid fuels grant program for pipe on Shade Hollow Road.

No additional updates were given on the Take 5 oil change business or the Wawa convenience store projects.

During the last meeting, Dunnstable Township sent a letter offering to grade dirt roads for a nominal hourly fee to the township. Township officials are requesting that township employees provide them with a list of the roads that could benefit from being graded and any additional materials or millings that may be needed to improve road surfaces.

The township’s tire collection event went very well with two dumpsters filled with tires to be recycled.
