Keystone Vaults Past Lionville 14-5
MOUNT UNION – It was another classic pattern for the Keystone 9-11 All-Stars, build an early lead, keep adding to that lead and fend off any late challenges. The strategy paid off with a 14-5 win over Lionville to stay alive in the State Championship tournament.
Lionville opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning then Keystone found their bats scoring 6 runs in the second inning. Then Lionville answered back with single runs in the second and third innings still trailing Keystone 6-3.
Keystone pounded out 3 runs in the fifth inning and 5 more in the sixth, allowing Lionville only one more run in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Top hitters on the night were: Cru Stover, 2 for 4, 2 HRs and 3 RBI; Ashton Probst, 2 for 2, 3-run HR total of 4 RBI and Kaden Irvin had a double.
Jack Hanna provided a defensive gem when he threw to third base for a force out from deep left field.
Starting pitcher, Luke Simcox got the win with a strong 4 innings of relief from Matt Conklin. Conklin struck out 7 and walked two while limiting Lionville to 2 runs. Owen Gill sccured the last out with a strike out after allowing a single in the sixth.
Next, Keystone will face North Allegheny to avenge their first round loss in the tournament in the loser’s bracket final, Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to take on the winner’s bracket champ, Red Land on Thursday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m.
