Optimist’s Round Table

By Martha Sykes

If I took a poll, many of us would probably agree that we live in a junk food world. At our picnics this summer, we all will satisfy our physical hunger with those very tasty desserts and some convenient food that probably will not provide much nutrition.

Another matter about junk, is that we all at one time or another, need to clean out our junk in our homes . We sometimes ‘hang on’ to things that are sentimental to us and before we know it, we have lots of those items saved!

Well, this week is an anniversary for me as it has been 46 years since my husband and I moved into our house that he built for us. Therefore, as I was writing this column, I thought about how much stuff is in the house that has been collected for all of these years.

Precious keepsakes from our kids growing up, lots of pictures, clothes that will fit some day, or souvenirs from trips and many other collectibles.

Well, just as we fill our bodies with unhealthy food, we can also fill our souls with spiritual junk food as well as fill our houses or our lives with too much junk also. Spending time and energy on activities that do not have eternal value dulls our spiritual appetite for God’s Word at times.

In Psalm 119:103, it says “How sweet are your words to my taste; they are sweeter than honey.” The psalmist for God’s word and he said they were sweeter than honey.

Do we read the scriptures enough to satisfy our spiritual hunger? Do we build up treasures in heaven like we gather treasures on earth?

This world can work tirelessly to draw us away from the spiritual food we need. We have to be careful to not be distracted by spiritual junk food.
