Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
When the Jews boasted to Jesus about how their fathers ate manna when they were in the wilderness, they quoted the Scripture: “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”
They thought that it was Moses who gave them the manna, but Jesus told the Jews they were wrong. “Moses gave you not that bread from heaven,” he said. It was his Father who sent it down from above.
Jesus is “the bread of God’ who came down from heaven. to give life to the world. (John 6:33) The Jews grumbled and complained when they heard him say this. (V.41)
“I am the bread of life,” he declared. Then he promised that those who come to him will never hunger, and those who believe on him will never thirst. (V.35)
Many years ago a man named Singh was distributing Gospels of John in India. He came to some non-Christians on a train and offered one of them a copy. He took it, and in anger he tore it in pieces and threw it out of a window.
It so happened in the providence of God that a man walking along the train tracks picked up one of the pieces, When he looked at it he saw the words “the bread of life,”
Someone told him that phrase was from the Bible. He bought a copy of the New Testament and found the words of Jesus: “I am the bread of life.” That little bit of paper brought him to Jesus, the bread of life.
