Runners Rise to the Challenge at 19th Annual Hyner View Trail Event
HYNER – On Saturday, April 19, the small town of Hyner came alive with the pounding of thousands of determined footsteps as the 19th Annual Hyner View Trail Challenge kicked off. A total of 1,400 runners took to the mountains, with 1,000 participants in the 25K and 400 elite athletes braving the grueling 50K. The event, renowned for its rugged beauty and physical demands, once again proved why it holds a legendary place in the trail-running community.
Both the 25K and 50K courses test the mental and physical stamina of even the most seasoned runners. The 25K features three major climbs and descents, totaling around 4,000 feet of elevation gain. Runners face steep ascents, exhilarating single-track paths, and stream crossings, all set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Pennsylvania wilderness.
For those pushing their limits in the 50K, the challenge deepens with five punishing climbs and approximately 6,500 feet of vertical gain. This year, new course adjustments kept things fresh and even more intense for return participants.
The spirit of camaraderie was evident from the start, with high-energy shouts of “Let’s go!” echoing through the early morning woods. Even at the back of the pack, runners motivated one another with phrases like, “As long as we finish,” and “Stick with me.”
Among the standout participants was Jesse Stoltzfuss, a 29-year-old from Lancaster County who began the race barefoot. “I had a hard time finding shoes that fit and didn’t bother my feet,” Jesse explained. “So I just sort of started going barefoot from there.” He planned to run at least 10 miles shoeless—and with no real intention of stopping to lace up.
Event organizer Craig Flemming praised the hard work of DCNR crews in preparing the trail. Recent wind storms had left significant damage, but thanks to their efforts, the route was cleared in time. “If you see a DCNR employee, thank them,” Flemming urged.
In true Hyner tradition, top finishers were awarded vintage axes instead of traditional trophies. The axe, a symbol of Pennsylvania’s deep-rooted forestry and trail-building history, adds a rugged, authentic flair to the event’s legacy.
This year’s axe winners included:
•25K Male Winner: Andrew Hutchinson (Harrisburg, PA) – 2:21
•25K Female Winner: Alicia Cutter (Hannson, MA) – 3:01
•50K Male Winner: Noah Dusseau (Seattle, WA) – 4:12
•50K Female Winner: Karen Dunn (Collegeville, PA) – 5:34
In preparation for the big day, the community also came together on Friday evening for a hearty pasta dinner hosted by local churches. Held just a short walk from bib pickup, runners were treated to generous servings of spaghetti and rigatoni—fuel for the challenging adventure ahead.
As always, local officials reminded drivers to be cautious near Hyner Bridge and along Route 120, where traffic congestion and heavy runner activity were expected.
Whether you were cheering from the sidelines, volunteering, or conquering the trail, the Hyner View Trail Challenge once again delivered a spectacular day of athleticism, nature, and community spirit. Congratulations to all participants—and until next year, keep climbing.
