Have you seen the Giwoggle?

By Lou Bernard

The Giwoggle has been the official monster of Clinton County since 2011. Legends of the Giwoggle go back to at least the Civil War era in Keating Township, where the monsters were believed to be conjured by local witches.

The creature was described as a werewolf, walking upright with the body of a wolf, but having bird claws and horse hooves, to confuse those who might try to track it. Even today, Giwoggles are reported in the remote forests of Clinton County, especially the northern part.

In February of 1909, the Giwoggle was seen on a building in downtown Lock Haven. It appears to have been making a comeback there—I spotted one in the Pennsylvania Room at the Ross Library recently!

The Giwoggle can be an elusive creature, but if you keep your eyes open, you might spot one around town.
