Keystone 11s take state opener, 7-4 over DuBois
ATHENS,PA – It was a late night but a good night for the Keystone 11 All-Star team in their state tournament opener at Athens on Saturday. In a rain-delayed start, Keystone earned a 7-4 win over DuBois. The post-midnight victory earned Manager Cole Hanley’s team a winners’ bracket second round contest Sunday at 5:30 p.m., the opponent Council Rock Newtown.
Because of weather issues, the game got a late start Saturday and play continued until after midnight and, at four and a half innings, was official.
Keystone pounded out 12 hits and four pitchers combined on a 4-hitter, starter Evan Edwards earning the win, with relief help from Cam Frank, Carson Smith and Bryan Rote.
Frank led the offense with four hits, including a double and an RBI, to lead the Keystone batters. Edwards was right behind with three singles and two RBIs. Rote had two singles and an RBI, Logan Bower with two singles and in with one single each were Angelo Tarantella and Heath Marino. Maverick Smith had an RBI.
Keystone jumped to an early 5-0 lead after two; DuBois answered with four runs in the top of the third and Keystone added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-4 lead.
The fifth inning started just before midnight and when DuBois was shut down over the final 1.2 innings by Rote, the final inning completed after midnight, the game, per Little League rules for the 11-age-group, became a Keystone win.
