Wildcats solid second at D6 tourney; will return 11 to regionals
ALTOONA, PA – All in all, Central Mountain had a solid showing at Saturday’s District 6 AAA tournament. Coach Biff Walizer’s Wildcats finished in second place, crowned two champions and advanced 11 wrestlers back to the Altoona Field House for next weekend’s Northwestern Regional Tournament.
Pre-tourney favorite Mifflin County emerged with the title; tied with the Wildcats midway through the championship round, the Huskies used their strong upper-weights to pull away to the title with 201.5 points, the Wildcats next with 189.5, State College third with 160 and Bellefonte fourth with 133.5. Both CM and Mifflin County will be bringing 11 wrestlers to regionals, followed by State College with nine and Bellefonte with eight. Mifflin County’s four individual winners, to the Wildcats’ two, helped provide the winning margin for the Huskies.
Wildcat champs were freshman Dalton Perry (34-2) at 126 pounds and sophomore Luke Simcox (32-4) at 132 pounds. Perry recorded two technical falls in his two bouts, including a championship round 23-5 win over Taylor Smith of Juniata. For Simcox it was his second district title in two years. He opened with a fall and finished with a 7-1 win over Bellefonte’s Aidan O’Shea in the final.
Central Mountain had four second place finishers in Taylor Weaver at 138 pounds, Griffin Walizer at 145, Rocco Serafini at 160 and Brayden Blackwell at 285. Taylor Weaver went 2-1 on the day, first period falls in his first two bouts running his career win total to 99 in his solid four-year career. He’ll look for win number 100 at regionals next week.
The Wildcats added third places from Clayton Foster at 113, Braylen Corter at 152 and Damien Galentine at 189. Fourth places came from two freshmen, Luke Ananea at 120 pounds and Jacob Weaver at 172. For Weaver it was a bittersweet finish. He was ahead in his consolation semifinal bout when he was brought hard to the mat in an illegal move by his opponent and could not continue. He won that contest by disqualification but had to forfeit his third place bout. As a precaution, the Wildcat freshmen was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, checked out and released.
The lone Wildcat not to advance was senior Micah Walizer who lost on a controversial call in a consolation bout at 215 pounds. Coach Walizer made a point to compliment wrestler Walizer for his commitment and leadership provided to the team. The head coach indicated his team had a solid tourney, pretty much in line with the pre-tourney seeds, noting the Wildcats didn’t have many calls go in their favor over the day of wrestling.
The Mifflin County coaching staff was recognized as the district staff of the year, Bellefonte winning the same award on the junior high level. The Red Raiders’ Jude Swisher was named tourney Outstanding Wrestler.
