Obituary

Bessie Anna McHenry, 91, of Mill Hall passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021 surrounded by family at home.

Born at home in Laurel Run on March 16, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Frank W. and Mabel Motter Peter.

Bessie was a graduate of Lock Haven High School.

On April 27, 1949, she married her love, Lee J. McHenry, Jr., with whom she shared 72 years of marriage before his passing on May 23, 2021.

In her early years, she worked for Sylvania and then Woolrich.  Together, Bessie and Lee owned and operated McHenry’s Fabric Shop in Avis from 1970 until 1988.  After its closing, they operated a produce stand out of the store’s parking lot for several years.

Bessie was a longtime member of McElhattan United Methodist Church.

She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Lock Haven and the Woolrich Squares- with whom she and Lee participated in many square dances.

Bessie sewing, crafting, quilting and canning.  Recently, she had become a “Diamond-Dot Painting” addict.

Surviving are five children: John (Linda) McHenry of McElhattan, Diane Nichols of Woolrich, Jeffrey (Darcy) McHenry of Avis, Tammie (Russell) Weaver of Lock Haven and Terrie (Chris) Moore of Mill Hall; a son-in-law, Steven Johnson of Lock Haven; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Lee McHenry, Jr., she was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan J. Johnson on February 3, 2021; two brothers, William and Samuel Peter; and a sister, Florence Miller.

A Memorial Service for Bessie will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at 1 P.M. at the McElhattan United Methodist Church, 502 McElhattan Dr., McElhattan with Rev. Jay Saldana officiating.  A luncheon will follow.

Friends and family will be received at the church on Sunday from 11 A.M. until the time of the service.
