Words of Grace
By Mahlon Nevel
In Hebrews 3:1 we are told to consider both Jesus and Moses. They were faithful to the one who called them. (v.2)
Moses was a faithful servant, the servant of God. (v.5) Jesus was a faithful son, the Son of God. (v.6)
Herschel Ford tells a story that happened many years ago out west in the Rockies. An engineer was taking a freight train over a steep mountain grade.
Suddenly something went wrong with the brakes and soon the train was out of control. Just ahead was a bridge that crossed the river. It would not withstand the impact of this wild train.
The firemen jumped to safety on one side and the conductor jumped to safety on the other side. When the train hit the bridge, the bridge gave way, causing the train to plunge down into the river.
Later on all the crew members were found, but not the engineer. Some thought he might have jumped to safety and had run off into the Woods.
But his gray-haired mother saw it differently. “No,” she said,” my boy was faithful. He never left that train. When you lift up the wreckage, you will find him there. “
The mother was right. When they lifted up the engine, they found him with his hand still on the throttle. And so was our Savior faithful. He was faithful unto death, “even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8)
